Kevin Gale was born in Kiama in 1930, the sixth of 14 children. He attended Wollongong High School and started his first job as the Office Boy at Lysaghts Port Kembla 60 years ago and has worked continuously ever since.
Kevin moved to Canberra 48 years ago at age 27 as the Manager of Rogers Department Store. Eventually Rogers was taken over by JB Young, who were taken over by Grace Bros, who were taken over by Myer, who were taken over by Coles. Kevin survived all this, but in 1992, after a career spanning 47 years, he was retired.
At age 62, Kevin was not prepared to accept being redundant and sought alternative employment. For the next three years he worked four days a week as a clerk for a local company in Fyshwick. In 1996, Kevin received a telephone call from Paul Donaghue, owner of the Magnet Mart stores, to see if he could do a two month job for him. Nearly nine years later that job continues with Kevin working for Magnet Mart an average of two days a week.
Apart from Magnet Mart, Kevin works one day a week for a City based legal practice, does the accounting for a Waste Collection Company and a myriad of other small jobs. With the assistance of his wife, Beverly, Kevin also does the accounting for 13 fast food restaurants in Canberra and Goulburn.
Kevin is looking forward to receiving the maximum benefit payable under the Australian Government's Pension Bonus Scheme . This initiative is designed to encourage people to stay working after age 65 and defer pension payments.
"I enjoy the work I do and will keep working for as long as people require my services", said Kevin. "If my good health continues, I will consider retiring in five years time, when I will be 80."
