Age no barrier to training for a new career
|
Vicky Shaw had spent 21 years working as a telephonist and consultant but was made redundant and spent the next three years unemployed. During her time of unemployment she undertook volunteer work.
Vicky’s work experience gave her a strong desire to pursue caring work. The more work experience she undertook, the more her passion for working in this industry grew. Although her work experience was quite different it had given her excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to listen carefully and to relate to the elderly.
At the age of 57 Vicky decided that her passion for caring warranted a change of career and she decided to undertake a New Apprenticeship in aged care. She commenced a New Apprenticeship hosted by a nursing home. Vicky carried out a combination of employment and off-the-job training to gain a Certificate III in Community Services (Aged Care).
Since completing her New Apprenticeship qualification Vicky has been offered ongoing work with her host employer and has undertaken further study to enable her to administer medications to residents.
Vicky’s employer was very happy to offer her ongoing work as they feel that she is a great staff member with a genuine team spirit. Vicky has a natural flair for dealing with the residents of the nursing home and shows a genuine empathy for others.
