Experience is an asset, not a barrier

David West has been a butler for the rich, famous and powerful – Madonna, U2, Tina Turner and even Queen Elizabeth II during Expo 88 in Brisbane! From the hospitality industry, David moved into training and employment counselling, working for a long period with one company before being retrenched. David is now working for Centacare Employment as a marketing and employment consultant, but he remembers what it was like to be unemployed and a mature age job seeker. “You have a lot of experience to offer employers, but sometimes your mature age can be a barrier,” David said. “The people who interview you are younger and sometimes they can feel threatened that maybe you are after their job – all you want is to be given a chance to get back on your feet and feel worthwhile in your self.”

David finds his work with Centacare Employment very rewarding, and his time being unemployed himself enables him to relate well with the concerns of his clients. “The acceptance of Centacare to look at my maturity as an asset and not as a barrier has given me the chance to fulfil my ambition to help others who are unemployed and to help them back into the workforce,” David said.
