You can teach an “old dog” new tricks
|
Until five years ago, Bruce Smith had spent his entire life in the aviation industry. When his first career came to an end, Bruce approached different companies to become one of their sale representatives. The result, says Bruce, was always the same: “If a company did take the time to reply, it was a negative result – not enough experience, no university degree, too old.”
Bruce is now working for All Type Rentals, a equipment hire company that specialises in machinery and party hire, and life has been better for him since starting his new career. Bruce greatly admires and respects his employers Marion and Marty Corbley, who foster a sense of family among their staff. He also reserves special thanks to his mentor Patrick “Paddy” Bell for his guidance. “I am so grateful to him for his help,” Bruce said. “It just goes to show – you can teach an “old dog” new tricks.”
The mature age policy that Marion Corbley has put in place for All Type Rentals certainly gets Bruce’s endorsement. “I urge all employers to look at the older employee,” he said. “They are less likely to take days off and are completely willing to listen and learn.” |
