16/10/06 - Flexible working practices a big winner at the 2006 AHRI Awards

The Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) Award for Excellence in Innovation has been awarded to Main Roads WA.

This year’s Innovation Award, which is sponsored by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, was developed to recognise organisations for ‘Creating and Managing Flexible Work Practices’.

Main Roads WA was selected from a shortlist of 10 finalists to win the Innovation Award in Sydney on October 5th 2006, in recognition of their success in offering their large and diverse workforce a range of flexible working practices including home-based, part-time and job-share options as well as a phased retirement programme.

The judges also cited two short-listed entries as highly commended: Aker Kvaerner Australia (an engineering company that restructured its working week to allow all staff a better work/life balance) and Roberts Research Group (a market research company that facilitated part-time and working from home options for staff).

This years AHRI Award for Excellence in Innovation demonstrates that many businesses are well down the path to implementing family friendly policies for their staff and the nominations included a variety of innovative approaches to identify the flexible work practices that best suit the business and then using these practices to enhance staff retention and recruitment.
