Retired accounting and finance professionals are taking up short term assignments.
A pilot project by CPA Australia in conjunction with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and Professional Careers Australia (PCA) involving 28 participants in Canberra, placed 22 mature age accounting and financial professionals back into paid employment.
The aim of the pilot was to examine the viability of retaining mature age accountants in the workforce to help meet the demand for skilled accounting professionals. The success of the pilot hinged on the requirements of employers matching the needs of employees.
The skills shortage in accounting and finance, has significantly diminished the availability of contractors for short-term assignments. For many of the mature-age candidates in the pilot, the short-term assignments with breaks between contracts suited their lifestyle needs.
This flexibility was a major selling point to potential employers, who were pleased to access readily available and experienced accountants on non-ongoing terms.
