7/2/07 - Businesses love their MUMS

A business love affair is sweeping across Melbourne. Small to medium sized companies are taking advantage of the corporate skills of people re-entering the workforce on a part time basis after a period of parental leave.

“Parents returning to work have been frustrated with either low paid temp work or full time employment which doesn’t fit their busy ‘mum hours’. Now they can have the lifestyle choice of one employer on flexible hours,” says MUMS founder and entrepreneur, Mr. Peter Watt.

MUMS, an acronym for Managing Unutilised Mothers Services, is a unique company set up specifically for matching skilled parents with suitable businesses on a part time basis.

“It was time for me to step out into a work environment and yet be able to balance work with my family. It feels really good to use my professional skills again, and contribute my share to the household budget,” says Alison Day, an ex IT professional from Camberwell and mother of two.

“I have had a number of other businesses over the years and I noticed that I achieved more productivity from experienced mothers than any other employee,” says Mr. Peter Watt. “These women are motivated to help businesses and share their life experiences. They can multi-task, are reliable and dedicated to the job.”

MUMS candidates are employed on a task oriented basis for agreed hours per week, thus keeping their time flexible.
“This is the start of a whole new way of managing people. Rather than a regimented system where employees ‘have’ to be present at a place of business, employers can focus on the task required, regardless of the time zone,” Peter adds.

“We needed a part time corporate person to handle some research for our company,” says Justin Ganly, managing director of Deep End Services, “and MUMS sent along two candidates for us to select. Our problem was which one to choose. They were both 10 out of 10.” Justin is convinced: “Using MUMS on a part time basis was the way to go for our business.”

MUMS also provides an alternative to companies hiring persons to fulfill the various tasks required.
Nowadays most businesses hire one individual, and then get them to multi-task accounting, sales, marketing, and PA-activities. By using MUMS, businesses have the option to hire separate individuals for different tasks on an agreed fee basis. In most cases this will reduce the overall cash commitment of a full time person.

“This is a win-win for both our motivated candidates, and businesses getting the job done in a timely and cost effective manner,” Peter adds.
